Understand why dogs chew
Puppies, like babies and toddlers, explore their world by putting objects in their mouths.
Adult dogs can engage in destructive chewing for a number of reasons. To modify that behavior, you must first determine why your dog is chewing and remember, it is not doing it to annoy you.
Possible reasons for destructive chewing may be because your dog is bored, suffering from separation anxiety, his behavior is related to fear, or he wants to get attention.
Teach your dog what to chew
If you don’t want too many objects to be available in your dog’s mouth, keep them out of reach. Put your valuables in a safe place. Keep shoes and clothes indoors and books on shelves.
Provide your pet with plenty of edible toys and bones to chew on. Pay attention to the types of toys that keep him entertained for long periods of time, and keep offering him items of those types.
Try to make your toys clearly distinguishable from household items. Don’t confuse your dog by offering shoes and socks.
Supervise your dog until he learns the house rules
At home keep it with you and on its leash. When you are not at home, choose a safe place and let your dog be there as a test. Provide fresh water and toys to make him feel comfortable and safe.
Some puppies like to chew on dirty underwear. This problem is solved by always placing underwear in a closed basket.
Provide a regular exercise plan

Have realistic expectations
At some point your dog will inevitably chew something you value; This is often part of the transition to a new home. Your pet needs time to learn the rules of the house and you have to remember to take precautions and keep things out of reach.
Never discipline or punish your dog after the fact
If you discover that an item has been chewed, even minutes after it is chewed it is too late. Try not to punish your dog and do not hit or yell at him. Your dog can’t reason that he broke those shoes an hour ago and that’s why you’re scolding him. Some people believe that this is what a dog is thinking because he runs and hides or because he looks guilty.
