The First Dogs Are Born By In Vitro Fertilization

The first dogs are born by in vitro fertilization

IVF was one of the greatest human achievements in history, hands down. Many families have been able to fulfill their dream of being parents thanks to this method. But did you know that it has also been put into practice with animals? More particularly with dogs. Don’t go, let’s tell you.

When reading the title of this news, there are several questions: where? How? and because? Let’s answer one by one so that you can see that the animal world is increasingly prone to techniques for use in humans.

Where were the first dogs born by in vitro fertilization?

beagle

It was at the University of New York at Cornell . A group of researchers from this institution have been the first in human history to get a litter of no more and no less than 7 cubs to be born. Everyone is happy about the achievement because they say that it is a great advance that can be of enormous use. We are going to count its possible uses in the third question: why?

How are the first dogs born by in vitro fertilization?

To achieve this achievement, the scientists had to remove at least 3 major obstacles. Which?

  • Extract the eggs from the animal. Unlike humans and other animals, canine eggs when they are born must be kept in the female’s tubes to mature before being fertilized. How did the researchers overcome this hurdle? Well, they measured the creature’s hormonal levels daily and extracted different eggs on different days to find out what time would be the most fertile.
  • Create the same fertilization environment. They prepared the semen in a culture to which they added magnesium, thus creating the same fertilization environment that would be in the body of a female.
  • In 2013 they managed to get a dog to give birth to a puppy as a result of in vitro fertilization. These embryos that were successful were frozen. Once the most fertile day had been recognized, those embryos could be inserted into the dog and out of 19, 7 were successful in being born this litter that we are talking about.

But why all these efforts? Dogs are not rational animals that wish to have children. What is the reason?

This research began thinking about preserving endangered species. Having managed to create life through frozen embryos can mean that when an animal in danger of extinction dies, the ovules of the female can be extracted and thus promote the species.

Another reason occurs because frozen embryos can be modified with new genetic techniques to fix possible malformations, thus ensuring that newborn animals are born healthy. Without a doubt, an achievement for science and species preservation.

Science advances without stopping and that there are people who are thinking of using it to help animals and preserve their species is something that we love and that we wanted to share with you.

Every day there are more and more species in danger of extinction due to man’s mismanagement of the Earth’s resources and also due to his ambition and lust for power. But there is something we can all do to avoid so much damage:

    • Do not buy any clothing or household item that is made from fur, fur, or any other part of the body of an animal.
    • Do not attend shows or attractions where animals are used. These are mistreated and poorly cared for.
    • Don’t buy, adopt. In one of our articles we explain the origin and treatment of the dogs that are sold in stores.
    • Report any signs of abuse you see, no matter how small.
    • If you see abandoned animals, call a protector.

If we all do our part, we can change the world! It is the work of humans to preserve this planet and the species that exist on it, since the environmental balance and the habitability of the world depend on how we behave with it.
