Meet The Strangest Dog Breeds

The strangest dog breeds attract attention for their peculiar physique

It must be recognized that, with so many breeds of animals, sometimes nature surprises us with some specimens that leave us with our mouths open. Well, today we want to show you the strangest dog breeds, those that leave us perplexed when we see them, and even those that encourage us to think if it really is a dog …

The strangest dog breeds

Chinese crested

Remember when we introduced you to the sphinx cat? Well, we could say that the Chinese crested – in the photo that heads this article – is its canine version. It is a hairless dog, at least on a large part of its body, because it does have long hair on its tail, on the underside of its legs and on its ears.

He also has a ridge of hair on his head that characterizes him. Surely the movie 101 Dalmatians came to mind , in which Cruella de Vil has one. Their name has to do with the  belief that they come from China during the 18th century.

Peruvian dog

This has an important similarity with the previous one. Does not have hair! As for its name, it is believed that the Spanish conquerors found one of these specimens among the Inca nobility during the 16th century.

They were venerated as if they were gods and were always part of the ceremonial acts. So much so that they are recognized as National Heritage of Peru. It is believed that their lack of hair is due to a genetic malformation and, therefore, they tend to contract diseases more easily than those who are protected by a coat of hair.

Bedlington terrier

If we have always believed that terriers look like a small sheep, you will not believe what will be in front of you when you see this specimen. It has a collection of hair on the top of its head and on the tips of its ears and feet.

Its skull is shaped like that of a sheep and the curvature of its back gives its body a peculiar shape. This is not a very old breed, as it is believed that it was bred for the first time in Bedlington, in England, as a result of the crossing of posters, dandie dinmont terrier and whippet. His work? He was a rat catcher!

Puli

We could not ignore this dog in the list of strangest dog breeds, because we cannot help but wonder when we see him if we are in front of a dog or in front of a mop. It is the official dog of Hungary and always tends to have its pink tongue sticking out from its enormous amount of black hair, which looks like dreadlocks.

Puli dog with dreadlocks

It seems that the first specimens were seen in the 9th century, when the tribes of Prince Arpad settled in the Hungarian steppe. However, this is a theory to be confirmed, as some believe that they were imported by the Mongols. What will be the authentic one? We don’t know, but we do know that he is a very special dog.

Tibetan mastiff

We do not know if it is a dog or a bear. His enormous amount of hair is obvious, and is undoubtedly his most attractive feature. His noble face and his fat, round and heavy body make him a very funny animal.

Tibetan mastiff

There are those who call him the lion dog because of the resemblance of the shape of his head to that of the king of the jungle. It is also named after the Tibetan Mastiff and, believe it or not, it is the most expensive dog in the world. Depending on its shape and beauty, there have been those who have been willing to pay up to two million euros for a copy of the breed.

In the beginning they were used to pull sleds and carts, as well as guardians and shepherds. Without a doubt, it is a very versatile dog.
