What are fleas and how do they work?

Fleas are small parasites without wings but with six legs, the last pair most developed to facilitate the jump towards its victim. They feed on the blood of its victim, so it will suck it until it gets all it wants. As long as there is enough blood, the flea will have a home.

They stick to the hair or skin of the animal, usually on the back, loins and abdomen. In puppies they will be seen especially on the head, ears and neck.

Fleas can cause irritation, bites, and blood loss in our pets. They also act as transmitters of diseases between people and dogs. Their saliva is what causes many dogs to have allergies to these beings. This is known as Flea Bite Allergic Dermatitis.

What is flea allergy or flea bite allergy dermatitis?

It is an allergy caused by flea saliva that creates extreme itching, irritation, swelling and causes the dog to scratch, lick and even bite the affected area. In addition, your hair could also fall out.

This allergy occurs especially in parts of the body such as the beginning of the tail, the abdomen, the thighs and the inguinal region.

For those dogs that have an allergy to fleas, something that can also be noticed in the excessive redness of the skin. Extreme care and prevention of these must be taken.

How to prevent when my dog ​​has a flea allergy

They say that a good defense is a good offense. That is why attacking fleas before they arrive will be our best asset to fight against them and take care of our pet while preserving health.

Although there are many antiparasitic products, they contain a high level of chemicals and could damage our pet’s hair or skin. Although you can always get some less harmful, it will not be enough. We must prevent them from coming home as well.

For this there are different home remedies that can drive them away. Also do not expose our dog to different situations or, at least, protect it before doing so.

• Light and water. This should be done for a few days, but we assure you that it will be worth it. Put water in a container with a little dishwasher, but trying not to foam. Then put the container under a lamp and leave it overnight with the light on. When you get up you will see that there are many fleas and the number will decrease as the days go by, making it clear that they are gone. This happens because fleas adore light, and when they go towards it they will jump into the cube, as it is where the reflection of it will be greatest.
• Lemon juice. This is a smell and taste that they hate. Therefore, the most effective, simple and quick way to get them to reach it is by adding the juice of two or three lemons in the mop bucket with the original water and mop. Of course, before you think about it, do not even think about applying it to your pet’s skin.

• Pennyroyal mint. You should only put bags of pennyroyal hidden around the house and it will be enough for the fleas to leave.
• Lavender and vinegar. A glass of vinegar and 40 drops of lavender diluted in a bucket of water. After scrubbing your house, go back to this mixture. All the fleas that are around your house will die or at least go silly. It is best to pass the aspirate afterwards to completely strike them down.
