Cats that live in homes, especially if they are closed, can become sedentary cats, one of the causes of this sedentary lifestyle is stress, which makes them spend hours without any physical activity, just resting or sleeping.

Cats become sedentary for various reasons, such as lack of stimulation or games, lack of exercise, incorrect diet, and one of the main reasons, as we said before, is the stress that the cat may be suffering.

One of the main problems that a sedentary lifestyle causes in cats is obesity, since they do not carry out almost any physical activity, as it happens to people, they gain weight. And as you increase in volume, it also becomes somewhat difficult for you to be able to perform any physical activity and that is when we see that this can become a kind of vicious circle.

With a sedentary lifestyle, the cat spends hours resting, eating food and not burning those calories with physical activities, is where the problem of overweight for the cat originates.

Consequences of sedentary lifestyle

Obesity itself is already a disease caused by the little physical activity of the cat and the intake of large amounts of food, but in turn it can create other diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, decreased fertility, diabetes millitus, lower urinary tract problems, among others.

How can it be prevented?

You must take care of the cat’s diet, you have to change its diet and you also have to put it into an exercise or game routine, in this way your cat will burn calories and will cause it to stay a little more active. The games should be played at least once a day, it is good that they are played for periods of short minutes several times a day.

In addition to this, it  is advisable to go regularly to the vet, so that you can monitor the health of our cat and know what measures can be taken in the presence of any of these diseases.

The vet can also help you maintain a healthy and appropriate diet plan for your cat, according to its age, health and physical activity. Most cats will always want to ask for food, but we must bear in mind that this is not healthy. It should be given only at the right times and a certain amount of food.

As we have already mentioned, keeping our cat stimulated is essential, in addition to strengthening the bond with our pet and this  helps them greatly. It does not require a lot of time or money, because playing with them is very simple, you only need the will to be able to play properly with your friend.

It must be borne in mind that it does not matter the age of the cat, whether it is a puppy or an adult, cats always like games where they need to hunt something. While it is true that their attention or energy will not be the same as when they were a puppy, they can still be played with, and this will benefit their physical and psychological health.

Additional care

Other problems that the house cat can present is that of the shedding of the skin. Cats that are in the street, are exposed to natural light and are aware of stationary changes. Those who are at home only receive artificial light with invariable temperatures, so their skin changes do not usually adjust to their natural cycles and do not last as long as usual. So the cat loses hair throughout the year.

It is important that we try to keep our pet’s coat healthy, providing it with foods rich in fatty acids to promote the health of the skin   and this in turn makes the cat’s coat lustrous and shiny.
