The mantle of the Alsatian

German Shepherds are large dogs with a robust body, so they require certain care from time to time to keep them well. The good news is that these dogs do not require much special care, due to their breeding designed to live abroad.

These dogs have an abundant outer coat of hair, which is quite curly and strong to withstand the rigors of external work. Add that it  also has an internal layer of hair that provides warmth and an additional protection factor against external agents.

The skin of the animal is also very strong and resistant to stop minor lacerations that you can suffer at work. Undoubtedly, it is a dog designed to withstand the rigors of day to day in the field  and, thanks to evolution, it does not require much effort to maintain it in its fullness.

In the case of the Alsatian variant, this breed does not know exactly where its name comes from ; some date it from the First World War and others disagree with this theory. The truth is that the breed became official at the end of the 80s by the FCI.

Alsatian German Shepherds usually shed their hair twice a year, so during these times you should brush your animal more than twice a week. The good thing is that this breed adapts very well to all types of weather, so don’t worry about the air conditioning of your pet.

Tips for cleaning the mantle

As is usual with German shepherds, it is only necessary to give it a bath when the coat is very dirty. We are talking about a breed that does not need much care because it maintains itself almost on its own ; Plus, it doesn’t lose a lot of body fat, so it won’t smell too bad in a long time.

If you see that your Alsatian requires a bath, we give you some tips to do it properly and avoid fights with your great companion:

• Before giving him his shower, remember to brush him before. This action will prevent a hairball from forming in the drain and will make your pet calmer.

• Brush it in the direction of the hair and never the other way around ; you will help him get rid of dead hairs and relax him.
• Use enough water to rinse it, avoid the area of ​​the ears and eyes when doing so to avoid bothering it and creating an infection.
• Only use rinses and shampoos that are appropriate for your pet. Products for humans can bring severe reactions to your dog’s skin.
• Eliminate any trace of the soap on the body. You will prevent the skin from being irritated and leaving lumps on its coat.
• Remember to brush it once the bath is over. In this way, you will remove any hair that has come loose during the bath and will avoid discomfort in the future.

In the case of the ears and legs, you should be more careful with them. The wax can stick to the hair to become lumps that can diminish its hearing, and in the legs it is necessary to be very careful with the knots.
