Bergamasco, breed of dog from the Italian Alps

Not long ago we told you about Rastafarian dogs, and the Bergamasco was one of them. It is such a peculiar breed that we have believed it deserves its own article. This dog from the Italian Alps has a very peculiar appearance and personality. Are you staying with us to get to know it?

Bergamasco, everything there is to know about him

History and origin of the Bergamasco

As we have said before, it originates from the Italian Alps and has been used as a sheepdog for years. The idea of using Rastafarian dogs as shepherds came up with the aim that wolves and other predators mistake them for a sheep and, when they went to attack them, they would be surprised. The lush fur also protects them from bites.

Interestingly, unlike other breeds, the origin of this dog is unknown. There are no documents that speak of him, nor any record of how many years this breed can make it exist.

Even so, perhaps because of its appearance, perhaps because of its sympathy (characteristic of Italians), this dog has spread throughout Europe and the existence of some specimens in America is even known.

Physical characteristics

Thus, at first glance, it is obvious that we must highlight their hair. It is one of the most characteristic Rastafarian dogs, although many confuse it with the komondor, another Rastafarian dog of Hungarian origin. His dreadlocks hair is something natural that comes from him and grows like that when it is cut, or when it is combed.

Bergamasco breed dog: behavior

Its texture is rough, and gray tones are accepted, with spots of this same color  and, on occasions, the isabela tone and the light reddish color. Black, if it is pure and opaque, could also be accepted. Under no circumstances will the white tone be accepted, be it unicolor or combined with another tone.

Their height ranges from 60 centimeters in males to 56 centimeters in females. The weight of the male is from 32 to 38 kilograms and in the females between 26 and 32 kilos. Despite its size, many people consider it a medium-sized dog. Perhaps because of the weight, which although he appears to have more, it is actually his hair that is bulging.

Their hair is abundant all over the body, including the ears and legs. There is no part of it that has less hair. It presents a harmonic shape, with a deep chest and a strong appearance.

The length of its muzzle is equal to the dimension of its skull. This makes its head appear large, although it is well proportioned to the rest of its body.

Character and temperament of the Bergamasco

Like almost all dogs that have been used for shepherds, the Bergamasco is also an intelligent dog  , very observant, patient and attentive. They are multifaceted, and the aforementioned qualities, together with this, make it ideal as a companion for the little ones in the house.

Bergamasco breed dog: care

In addition, it is a very affectionate and tolerant animal , so it will let the children do everything. However, despite their affable nature, they are dogs that must be socialized from puppies to avoid alpha male behaviors . In this way, you will have a friendly dog with everyone, be it children, dogs or adults.

Health and special care

One of the main needs that you will have to meet for this breed is exercise. It is a very active animal that has to burn adrenaline, and strengthen its bones and muscles. Walking and even running daily should be part of your daily routine.

Although his hair has dreadlocks, that does not mean that it should not be washed. What should not be done is combing it. Just apply a quality shampoo and a good conditioner to prevent strands from tangling with each other, and to add shine and a clean look to hair.

For the rest, the Bergamasco is a strong dog that does not need much care, although we do recommend rummaging through its hair to discover parasites or fleas that could hide in its mane.

If you want a loving and loyal dog to take care of your loved ones, possibly the Bergamasco is the pet you are looking for.
