The “Rare Bugs” association was in charge of fulfilling any dog’s dream: spending a day at the beach playing and splashing in the salty waves. The characteristic of this activity was that all the furry ones who enjoyed the walk have mobility problems. They use specially made wheelchairs for their needs.

The chosen place was Caleta del Gossets, in Alicante (Spain). This is a beach located in Cabo de Santa Pola and that allows the entry of dogs all year round. It is the first dog beach in the region and the second in the province (the other is El Campello). There the furry ones can go to spend their vacations and enjoy like crazy.

The foundation that takes care of these dogs depends on the solidarity and money donated by private individuals. It does not have a shelter. All the dogs (who have a disability) live in foster homes. Thanks to the contribution of the volunteers, they were able to pay for the trip to take them to the beach.

In total, there have been 17 canines that traveled from Madrid to Alicante and its dog beach. There they enjoyed a beautiful day of sun outdoors and playing regardless of wheelchairs. All the people who were there that day approached the organizers and congratulated them on their work. The dogs, in addition to sand and water, had contact with the affection and affection of the people.

The Spanish initiative is truly worthy of admiration and applause. Fortunately, it is not the only one. In Peru, an organization called “Milagros perrunos”, founded by Sara Morán, collects money not only for the treatment and feeding of the canines, but also to organize walks on the beach.

The idea is that until they get a new home the dogs can enjoy life even when they are in wheelchairs. This association of the city of Chorrillos has about 40 dogs with paraplegia or without hind legs. The contribution of the volunteers serves to pay for all their needs. Thus, from time to time they take the furry for a coastal walk.

Why adopt dogs in wheelchairs?

When a family goes to a shelter, they usually “choose” a young, healthy dog. The elderly, sick or disabled are almost always waiting. If we could understand that a pet with “problems” is equally (or more) affectionate and faithful, perhaps we would adopt it ruthlessly.

If you want to bring a dog in a wheelchair home, you will have to learn some important things about his personal care. But in everything else it is equal to raising any other furry. Surely the hostel has professionals who can guide you and help you with what you need. Knowing well the situation of the animal is essential and learning about its disability or impairment.

Bringing a disabled dog home may require some adaptations. For example, a spacious place to move or a ramp so you can go to the yard. We must also pay attention to their special needs, such as certain cures in the affected area or maintenance of the cart.

It is good to understand that for dogs there is no disability, that is a concept of the human being. Therefore, the animal will be happy to have a family and will not realize that instead of legs it uses wheels. No prejudice or fear. Adopting dogs in wheelchairs or the disabled is the best act of love there is.
