A Dog Refuses To Leave The Coffin Of His Master, Victim Of The Earthquake In Italy

A dog refuses to leave the coffin of his master, victim of the earthquake in Italy

The fidelity that dogs show to humans is something that those who love their pets, verify daily. But in extreme situations such as illness or death, this virtue manifests itself in an extreme way in some animals. This is the case of a Cocker Spaniel whose owner died in the earthquake that struck Italy recently. In a video you can see how the dog refuses to leave his place next to his master’s coffin.

Learn how a dog refuses to part with its owner who died during a funeral for earthquake victims

Andrea Cossu, 45, lived in the town of Pescara del Tronto, in the central area of the Italian peninsula. He was one of the almost 300 fatal victims of the earthquake that struck that country on August 24.

The man and his pet were “inseparable”, as explained by the human members of the family. Therefore, on the day of the funeral, the Cocker could not be absent.

And by that is meant the reaction of the animal. When they approach him to the coffin, he begins to sniff it and wag his tail, recognizing that Cossu was there. In other images it is seen how the dog refuses to separate from the place where its owner lay and lies down next to the crate.

Images from a gym turned into a large funeral home

The funeral was collective and was held at the Municipal Gymnasium of Monticelli (municipality of Ascoli Piceno). Authorities attended to fire and honor 35 people who lost their lives during the earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale.

Amid the mourning decreed nationally, they were present at the ceremoni to Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, among others.

But the news was the heartbroken puppy who did not want to abandon his owner. The master lay in one of the many caskets lined up in the gym.

Hachiko, Canelo and so many other stories of faithful dogs

Among the many more or less known stories of dogs faithful to their masters after their death, Hachiko’s is perhaps the most emblematic. The case of the Akita breed dog transcended borders and even Hollywood made a film on the subject.

In Spain the case of Canelo is famous. It was the pet of a vagabond from Cádiz who waited in vain for his owner at the door of the hospital. Unfortunately, this one had passed away.

But similar stories are known in different places and times. For example :

  • Fido, a furry man who, like Hachiko, went to a train station in the Tuscany region. there it awaited the return of its owner, a young man who died during the Second World War.
  • Collie, a dog that spent 9 years at the grave of its master. It happened in the Cemetery of La Piedad, in the city of Rosario, Argentina. And it remained in the place despite the fact that, after a while, the man’s body was cremated.
  • Bobby, the dog who died on the grave of his master, a Scottish policeman who survived 14 years.

Can questions such as fidelity and the love of dogs be explained from science?

So far scientists have not been able to find a concrete explanation. The reason that some dogs wait for the return of their deceased masters or spend their days next to their graves escapes.

We suppose that it must be difficult to demonstrate with an experiment questions that have to do with love and fidelity.

We hope that Cossu’s Cocker has found comfort in his loss in the rest of Andrea’s human family.
